❤ So informative. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for reading.
DeleteExcuse me, but in order what essenses do you think Maryln Monroe has. I'm doing a private Pinterest board and I would like to see in which ways the essenses flow though her
ReplyDeleteI haven't given it too much thought. I know she is some sort of Romantic Ingenue. She also had a lot of plastic surgery before becoming famous, which can sometimes complicate a style analysis.
DeleteWhat essences does Lily Collins have? I think she definitely has classic and gamine essence. Maybe also dramatic?

By the way, how much weight is assigned to the body shape when determining essences?
Might it be
DeletePrimary essences: Ingenue Gamine Classic
Secondary essences: Dramatic Natural
Tertiarary essences: none
I am not entirely sure about the order of importance here (though I am sure Natural can only be secondary) but I know that I can rule out Ethereal. I also don't think she has Romantic essence.
I don't think she looks overwhelmed in sportswear or oversized fits, and I think she looks badass in leather. She also has the compacity to look cute but she can also look boyish (she pulls off the pixie cut). Also she wears classic looks well.
I don't see any otherworldliness in her, and she also doesn't have any womanly, lush, sensual feminity. She looks youthful and sweet and has an innocent princess smile (classic and ingenue essence).
The softness in her face comes from her Ingenue essence.
And when determining essences body shape is not as important as face. Face makes up 80% of the analysis. Body shape makes up 20% so it's also not completely irrelevant.
DeleteThis means that paying attention to accomodating your essences visible in your face is more important than dressing for body type or body shape. Again not saying it's irrelevant, just not as important.
compacity = capacity
Delete(Sorry folks)
Oh, and what is the difference between Gamine Romantic and Ingenue? How do you spot the differences?
ReplyDeleteI think they're both youthful and romantic, but Gamine-Romantic's youthfulness is spunky & mischievous, whereas Ingenue's youthfulness feels more innocent and unjaded :)
DeleteHi, thanks for trying to help. I kinda knew that already though. I meant more like how do you spot the difference? Like where lies the exact difference? I don't mean the vibe. I mean distinct features that result in that different vibe.
DeleteAnd another question that came to my mind is another youthful and mature essence blend which is Ingenue Dramatic vs the youthful essence Gamine. I mean technically Ingenue Dramatic is a mixture of opposites yet again so maybe that means it amounts to gamine essence again? But how is it then that Christina Ricci doesn't shine as much in Gamine styles? (Or do I get it wrong here when it comes to Ricci? Maybe she has Gamine essence but it's less dominant? 🤷)
But really, how do tell Ingenue Dramatic and Gamine apart?
Hi,
DeleteFor the last question, I think that Ingenue-Dramatic and Gamine both have youthfulness, intensity, sharpness and an experimental way of dressing. But in my opinion there's at least two differences :
- Gamine has playfulness, dramatic does NOT come to play, dramatic is serious and intimidating. Ingenue will bring youthfulness and softness to Dramatic but it will still be a 'serious' blend.
- The other difference is scale. Gamine is more small-scaled than Ingenue-Dramatic. I think of Gamine as a star (a little sun, small and sparkly) vs Ingenue-Dramatic as a moon (imposing but gentle).
Some examples :
1. In Sharon Rooney (Dramatic Ingenue) you see the intensity (the black hair, contrasting with the skin, the gaze right at you) and the soft youthfulness (the little round nose, the round forehead, the big eyes), and if you Google 'sharon rooney finding alice' you'll see her in an outfit I find suited for Gamine essence (I think the coat honors her Dramatic though), but looking at her face I think she still looks serious and mature (Dramatic), and her sweet softness (Ingenue) still shines through, she doesn't come across as playful to me.
2. About scale. Imagine Miley Cyrus (Romantic Gamine Natural here) in a big wide coat, as bold and experimental as she is she would drown in it in my opinion, because she doesn't have the large scale of Dramatic. But Madonna (who is a bit shorter than Miley Cyrus) seems she can pull it off, because she has Dramatic.
I hope this helps :) These are just my opinions, I'm no professional and I'm still figuring it all for myself.
Are Ciaras essences truly purely Dramatic? Because I do see some softness in her.
ReplyDeleteExactly! I see Romantic essence in her. I think it might be dominant, too.
DeleteI am not saying she has only Romantic though. She still definitely has a lot of Dramatic. But she also distinctly looks like she has a lot of mature femininity.
DeleteWould you analyse Eva Green please? I think she has Dramatic romantic ethereal essences
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree, she likely has this essence blend.
DeleteSeriously thanks for taking the time to share this! I love this system a lot, it allows to appreciate different kinds of beauty in very different looking people.
ReplyDeleteHi, could you please make a post about age and style essences? I've noticed that Romantics under the age of 25 so often look as if they might have youthful essence but then as they mature you can really see that they had a mature Romantic essence all along.
ReplyDeleteActually I think it would be cool if you could write something about age and style essences in general :)
I really like this blog so I am very keen to see what you will write about next no matter what :)
McJimsey even went as far saying that ingenue disappears at this age and makes room for classic and/or romantic. I do not agree with this, as I know plenty people older than that who have clear ingenue in their blends (e.g. my mother and one of my brothers) and suit cute/small details and prints, but in my case, I am predominantly romantic and for me it was as you have observed - I wondered for a long time why the cutesy styles I used to love on myself just weren't working anymore, funnily I look more costumed in them than I do in ethereal styles (one of my lower essences). The only thing I can physically point to is that while my face is still soft, it is not baby-cheeks-soft anymore.
DeleteI was wondering if there's a tertiary essence how does it effect the other more primary essences? More specifically, how does the classic essence as tertiary effect the overall?
ReplyDeleteCan anyone tell me what these stars * are supposed to mean?
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that Audrey Hepburn has Romantic and Lily Collins doesn't. I mean it's very obvious now. They do have similarities, they share their Primary essences (but I'm not sure about how much they have of each). But it is quite clear that Lily Collins looks sooo much younger. Very obvious if you search for photos without makeup or with less makeup. And she has always looked so much younger than she actually is. You seriously wouldn't think she's 33.
ReplyDeleteWhereas Audrey Hepburn never looked as young as Lily Collins does which is quite the big indicator that Audrey must have additional mature essences. They both share Dramatic which makes them look a little more mature than other Gamine Ingenues but Audrey looks distinctly older, and I think it's safe to say that you can credit that her Romantic essence that Lily Collins noticeably doesn't have. This is so well demonstrated by how try-hard she looks when she wears these very mature yin styles. They don't flatter her at all. On Audrey Hepburn, however, they do look harmonious. Still maybe not her best looks but they still suit her.
I think this is very a interesting and important observation to make as it might explain why we didn't see Lily Collins end up in the role of Audrey Hepburn in the upcoming Apple Studios biopic but instead Rooney Mara. Rooney Mara does way better in mature styles, same as Audrey. Lily Collins looks far too youthful and sweet. Not saying it's an issue (though I do see Lily having quite a lot of insecurity about her not having any womanliness to her facial features and body). I think it's just something that we need to consider while assessing if she really would have been that suited for the role of Audrey (especially since it seemed that she tried very hard rubbing her similarities with her in but unfortunately, really — and this is my personal opinion, people — doing nothing to earn it).
So, just wanted to comment this here, be free to share your thoughts on this. But please stay polite, we can discuss everything rationally.
I also wanna clarify here that I don't want anyone to think that I'm neglecting Lily Collins' womanliness. I'm talking about her facial features which have quite girly (Ingenue) but also some boyish (Gamine), elegant (Classic) and theatrical (Dramatic) elements about it. But just no sensual, lush or womanly features (which would equate to Romantic). Her body shape is very tomboyish, straight and narrow, quite the typical column shape actually. And to anyone who's thinking that all this somehow makes her less feminine or to accuse me of saying that it makes her less feminine, please, take a pause right now. I am not saying that. And I am also not trying to objectify or badmouth anyone. She is still a beautiful woman with beautiful silouhette. It's just not conventional. She is not curvy, she's not particularly atheletic. She has quite the marathon runner figure I believe, and maybe that's a cool way to see it. Or drop any suggestions down below.
DeleteBut again, that does NOT make her less feminine.
Regarding not wanting to badmouth anyone I wanted to make it clear as well that if I'm saying that she did nothing to earn the role I am by no means saying she's a bad actress. Certainly not, okay. I'm just saying that it seemed to me that she tried a little too hard to make us see the resemblance between her and Audrey, purely based on their facial resemblance. It seemed a lot like she felt entitled to get the role due to that while never actually clarifying why she deserved to get that role over anyone else. I know that that might not necessarily be relevant in the film industry but seeing that is very competitive I do think it might be an important matter to talk about. On the other hand it doesn't make it any differnet from other jobs where you need the distinct qualifications to make you better suited than other candidates, and in that regard she didn't really stick out.
Furthermore I wanna discuss that we all sure as hell can't deny her resemblance to her but it must be said that there are distinct differences between them. Not only in their facial features/age appearance (maybe in their body shapes too? I dunno) but also in the way they carry themselves. I've heard and read that some people say that Lily Collins has more of that California girl energy while Audrey Hepburn seemed more aloof and sophisticated. Not saying Lily Collins is not capable of that, folks. I do believe, however, that Lily Collins' desperate seeming attempt takes away sooo much of that elegant sophistication that we would expect from an Audrey Hepburn reinterpretation. It seems a little sad that though that after Lily tried so hard to make us notice the resemblance she didn't get the role in the end. But just because they might not seem that much alike that of course doesn't mean that Lily Collins couldn't act the part.
That is also sure as hell.
Also I'll take this opportunity to correct some slips in the grammar or phrasings here:
I think this is a very interesting [...]
[...] Lily having quite a lot of insecurity for not having much womanliness [...]
Sorry, I intended to write, "[...] I don't want anyone to think that I'm denying her her womanliness [...]"
DeleteNeglect was definitely not the right word here.
Not "if" but "[...] when I'm saying that she did nothing to earn the role [...]"
DeleteFits better.
I hope I'm not discovering more things I wanna correct, or we'll never see the end of it...
athletic (not atheletic)
ReplyDelete... oopsie
I really don't get why you deleted my comment on Natalie Dormer not having Romantic essence. We may have come to agree on her having Gamine (because I wasn't entirely sure about that). I would have loved to have a discussion about this, but this is just insanely immature. Did you think it would undermine your status as an "expert" offering Kitchener essence typing services? I mean, sure, I kind of get that, but also, that's kind of stupid because nobody on the internet (except for John Kitchener himself) is truly an expert. We are all trying to understand, and sometimes we're guessing. We can't really be sure about everything, and we surely can't know how well we've actually understood these systems, unless we've talked about it with Kitchener himself. Alas, you are not the only one, this hubris seems to be a thing about other people who offer these kinds of services (meaning Kibbe and color seasons), too. It's really unfortunate because what you don't seem to understand is that there are a lot of people who have a similar level of knowledge or maybe more, discussing essences with you who just as well could offer services as well if starting a business like that was only about typing. What I'm trying to say is you're not better because you're offering services. Well, actually you deleting my comment rather proves how inadequate you must feel concerning your expertise after I touched on some valid points. You are not the only expert who feels that way, either. However, true experts, I believe, understand they can't be right about everything and actually listen to others criticizing them instead of shutting them down in some way because of their own perceived superiority as an expert. But I think, if you can't handle criticism (and from my side it wasn't even harsh criticism, except for this comment maybe), the internet is definitely the wrong place for you to be.
